Easy Landscapes

Three Tuesday Afternoons

Landscapes will be explored with minimal drawing, focusing on atmospheric perspective, color harmony, value, and texture.

This is a guided class that encourages personal expression!

Supply list for students: The best paper you can afford — minimum size 9x12”. (100% cotton cold press is highly recommended!)      

Masking tape and boards (if not working on a block.) …We will be completing two paintings each day. (Necessary: two different paper set-ups, as we will be working on pieces simultaneously.)

The back of old paintings or a sketch book (100% cotton not necessary) for practicing.

Watercolor palette of your choice, one with both large flat mixing surfaces and separated wells recommended.  (I use white dinner plate)

Small box of non-lotion tissues.

Mid-sized (#6-8) CHEAP stiff fan brush… we’re going to be giving it a “haircut.”   Old toothbrush. White gouache.  Masking fluid (I use Pebeo.)

Ideally, we become a consistent group, whose input is varied and meaningful. The idea is that you will focus on a subject and approach to carry your ideas forward in a connected way. Work outside class is essential.

Take time to reflect on your artwork and analyze the feedback you receive from the instructor and peers.  This course will help you identify strengths and weaknesses in your paintings, and use this information to refine your technique and style. Continually challenging yourself to grow as an artist, this class aims to introduce students to the principles of composition and provide them with the necessary skills to analyze and critique artwork effectively. 

Through practical exercises, demos, and discussions, students will develop a critical eye to evaluate and provide constructive feedback on artwork. Class begins with a group critique setting on what the student is currently working on.  The class will then move to simple exercises as a warm- up. Experimenting and trying new things is key to progression in your process and style development as an artist  – it's an essential part of the creative process!

A Different Approach to Painting the Nude

Loosen up and trust your instincts. Paint the figure in bold non-naturalistic colors Taking inspiration from Rodin’s and O’keeffe’s watercolor sketches (She did go through a figurative period early in her career.) this course concentrates on painting the figure starting with a “mass gesture” rather than contour or construction lines. We will concentrate first on capturing the figure as a whole and then will add details to it.

We will begin with lots of bold gesture studies in brush and ink, move from there to a full range of values in monochrome, then a limited 2 color palette and finally a limited 3 primary color palette plus black.

To keep the cost down, we will be working from reference photos rather than a live model.

In this workshop, we’ll focus on the bloom technique perfected by Australian artist Shelee Carruthers. Using untinted house paint, “This Little Piggy” pigments, Australian and U.S. Floetrol, Jo Sonja Gloss Varnish, and a variety of additives, you’ll learn how to create striking effects and textures.

You’ll make your own pouring medium, mix pigments, and experiment with a cell activator to bring your creations to life.

This beginner-friendly class guides you through the full process — from mixing paints for smooth, flowing results to exploring different pouring techniques that produce vibrant, dynamic patterns. No experience is necessary — just bring your curiosity and willingness to play with color!

VIRTUAL: Walking in the Sun

In this workshop I will teach you how to simplify scenes and take the fear out of painting people, to see things as simple shapes and eliminate unnecessary detail. We will work with a limited palette and I will teach how to paint wet in wet, dry brush, and the importance of the water to pigment ratio. At the end of the class you will go home with a completed painting and the confidence to put people in your own paintings.

My paintings are inspired by the effect of light and shadow on our environment, creating dynamic shapes and colours. I especially enjoy painting people going about their everyday lives, and I hope to inspire you to see future paintings everywhere you look.

Watercolor Texture & Transfers

Using Implied and Real Textures for Expressive Paintings

This class is designed with beginners in mind, but all are welcome to join. Participants will also earn five credits toward our Beginners Watercolor Academy program.

Beginning students will learn how to explore unique textures and transfer techniques in this creative class.  You'll learn how to create texture using materials like salt, plastic wrap, dry brush, and splattering. 

Student Supplies:

Bring a few of your favorite photos with subjects that have texture for example trees, animals, rocks, waterfalls, old barns, boats, flowers or foliage etc.

Your watercolors, pallet, and lightweight support board of choice

Various brushes – rounds and flats plus an inexpensive 1” Bristle brush (from the hardware store 

Several Watercolor paper sheets - approx. 11” x 15”, 140 lb. watercolor paper.

Join Rae Andrews for a dynamic three-day workshop exploring expressive watercolor techniques, playful design, and bold use of color. Each day offers a different focus, giving students the chance to experiment, stretch their creativity, and develop stronger compositions.

Day 1: Semi-Abstract Florals  Rae will guide students through creating vibrant, close-focus florals using her Wet-into-Wet approach. Lessons will highlight balance and imbalance, design, composition, and the role of light—all enhanced by Rae’s signature use of dramatic color and value contrasts.

Day 2: Landscape Studies
The focus shifts to landscapes, where Rae will demonstrate how to create depth and atmosphere while preserving the white of the paper—one of her hallmark techniques. Students will work on close-focus, dramatic scenes such as a garden gate, a bridge over a creek, or a sunlit veranda. Rae’s “painting in sections” method helps maintain light and freshness throughout the work.
Tip: Avoid distant or panoramic references; choose images that bring the viewer into the scene. Please bring your own reference photos if you’d like—Rae will also provide options.

Day 3: Creative Design
The final session encourages imaginative exploration, using subjects such as shells, birds, florals, or landscapes reimagined through bold design choices. The emphasis will be on drama, subject isolation, and geometric frameworks to create strong, compelling compositions.

Instructor Bio
Rae Andrews is a multi-award-winning artist known for her dramatic style and bold use of color. A teacher of watercolor and other mediums for over 50 years, Rae’s work is infused with energy and her love of expressive design.

Born in Australia, she holds two art degrees from the University of Sydney. Rae founded and ran a 400-student art school in Sydney, later owned two art galleries in Maui, Hawaii, and now lives in Austin, Texas. She teaches online and leads workshops internationally.

After a break for lunch, artist Katherine Rodgers will guide you in creating your own Frida-inspired artwork—drawing on symbolism, heightened emotion, and hidden meaning. Whether or not you include a self-portrait, you’ll craft a piece that tells your story in the spirit of Frida’s fearless expression.

About the Presenters
Dr. Missy Gaido Allen is an art historian and professor at Houston Community College. A native Houstonian, she studied Studio Art and Art History at Trinity University in San Antonio and at Trinity College in Rome. She also attended the MFAH Glassell School for photography, earned her M.A. in Art History from Rice University, and received her Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Iowa.

Katherine Rodgers is a watercolor instructor at WAS-H and a member/owner of Archway Gallery in Montrose. An award-winning, self-taught artist, Katherine holds degrees in Human Ecology and Nursing from the University of Texas at Austin. Her artistic skill stems from years of teaching and a natural creative lineage. A Houston resident for the past three years, she has lived across the U.S., Europe, and the Caribbean—each place influencing her artistic journey.

STUDENT SUPPLIES:  Bring your watercolor supplies, paints, palette, and paper. Recommend a piece of cold press paper, size 11 x 14 or
