    Find Your Path

    Carla Gauthier

    Four-Week Class

    June 4, 11, 18, 25

    9 am - 12 pm, Thursday MORNINGS

    Tuition Non-Members $220 / $180 Members

Do you want to push your painting, define your style, and create a body of work that is cohesive and personal? This will be a student-driven class, with more of a coaching/critique vibe, helping each artist work towards a simple goal – to find their “path” whether it be realistic or abstract, portraits, landscapes, still-life based….. whatever it is that inspires you. This class is not a “how-to” class. We will discuss concepts, artistic principles, techniques, color schemes that will help each artist regardless of their style and subject and often paint together to learn a new technique. Ideally, we become a consistent group, whose input is varied and meaningful. The idea is that you will focus on a subject and approach to carry your ideas forward in a connected way. Work outside class is essential.

    Level: Intermediate, Advanced

    Supply List

Please bring regular watercolor supplies, palette, brushes, paper, paper towels, pencil, eraser, sponges, water sprayer etc.

Be prepared to paint outside of class, so that we can critique during class time and keep your painting goals on track.

Safety Alert: Individuals attending this activity should be aware that they require the ability to safely descend stairs in an emergency.

Mohammad Ali Bhatti is a Pakistani American painter; currently he resides in Houston Texas. He first came to the US in the early 1990's to earn his MFA from Edinboro University in Pennsylvania. He then earned his Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Arts from Ohio University, Athens. He has been a professor of Art at Ohio University as well as an instructor at the University of Houston. For the last 30 years he has painted and exhibited around the world, resulting in more than 35 solo exhibitions and numerous juried shows; including places such as Turkey, Italy, Uzbekistan, Glasgow, United Kingdom, Nepal, Thailand, Pakistan, Dubai, Egypt, Russia, Mexico, China, India, Chile, Singapore, and Malaysia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Dr. Bhatti’s art is an exploration of movement, energy, and the raw emotion that emerges from the act of creating a painting. Through bold strokes, dynamic textures, and an intuitive use of color, he seeks to capture the essence of motion—both physical and emotional—on the canvas. He captures the mood, excitement, vitality, and dynamic movement of each scene. Every detail of the cowboy lifestyle; horses, livestock, are painted with keen observation in a painterly style. Visual interest is heightened by dramatic expressions, chiaroscuro, and energetic movement. His compositions are vibrant in capturing the color, excitement, and vitality of the characters and rich cultural heritage of the Southwest.

Dr. Bhatti’s distinctive style, bold brush strokes, intense colors and dynamic compositions are instantly recognizable and collectors throughout the United States and abroad value and prize his work. He is represented by a few art galleries in Texas such as Austin galleries, Art on12, Wimberley and Archway gallery Houston; and his artwork can be found in both public and private collections.

Currently teaches at Glassell School of Art, Houston, a member of the American Watercolor Society and the International Watercolor Committee, Mohammad Ali Bhatti creates works using many mediums that burst with color and positive energy.

Additional information is emailed to those who register.

Join us for an inspiring day of art and creativity at BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Temple. The temple materials and sculptures were carved out of Italian marble and Turkish limestone by 3,000 craftsmen in India, and then shipped to Houston for building this magnificent mandir. It is composed of 33,000 pieces of marble and limestone that were fitted together in tongue-and-groove fashion like a three-dimensional puzzle. The entire structure, including the foundation, does not contain a single piece of iron or steel. The details in the columns and walls include carvings of deities, dancers, musicians, elephants, horses, flowers and geometrical designs.

This Plein Air event will focus on painting a sculpture in an outdoor setting.

Below are some helpful YouTube video demos to practice at home before going to this event on location. With YouTube videos, I usually first watch the entire demo to see the result and make notes of important points. Then, I start the video again and paint along. I like the convenience of YouTube demos that can be paused, and so I can paint and learn at my pace.

I hope you enjoy practicing in advance and are excited about our topic – painting an open-air artwork in Plein Air!

    Easy Watercolors

    Marge Ragam

    One-Day Workshop

    Saturday, June 20

    10 am - 4pm
    Tuition $110 Regular / $90
    Members

Students will learn how to paint in layers, which is one of the important concepts in watercolors. They will also learn about concepts of values, colors, and consistency. This class will teach you that watercolor painting is a gentle play of color and movement, where soft washes blend and flow naturally across the paper. There is no fixed subject—only the quiet conversation between pigments as they spread, overlap, and fade. The

loose shapes and subtle transitions invite the viewer to slow down, breathe, and find their own meaning within the colors. It celebrates imperfection, spontaneity, and the beauty that emerges when control is lightly held and the water is allowed to lead.

    Student Supply List:

Here’s a clear, beginner-friendly watercolor class supply list you can use.  These supplies will last forever and will make the job really easy.

Arches Cold-pressed watercolor 300lb lb (640 gsm) - 9.5 inches x 12inches two of them. This is the thickest sheet in Arches series. It is perfect for layering and can hold lot of water. You can buy it at any store and cut two pieces 9.5 inches x 12 inches or have the store cut it for you. Texas Art Supply helps with cutting.

2B drawing pencil, sharper and Eraser Synthetic Artist's Sponges (can be found at any store, hobby lobby sells for $2)

Watercolor paints (pan or tube set) recommended – Any paints that you already have or Van Gogh or Cotman or Winstor and Newton. Basic colors - Cadmium Yellow,  Cadmium Red,  Alizarin Crimson,  Lavender, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Payne’s Gray, Sap Green

Watercolor brushes - Hybrid Round brushes (sizes 8 & 14) Flat brush (optional for washes)

Water containers (2 jars — one for clean water, one for rinsing) (WAS-H has plenty available)

    Masking tape (optional)

    Paper towels (for blotting/excess water)

Spray bottle (for keeping paints moist)

Marge (Madhavi) Ragam:  I am an architect (University of Texas Arlington) and watercolor artist.  I have been painting throughout my life and really enjoy watercolors. I love the fact that watercolor has transparency and vibrance that no other medium has. My watercolor work is inspired by the light, emotion, nature, and beauty found in everyday life. Having worked as a lecturer and teaching assistant at Grad. School and as a private instructor, I understood that everyone can excel at painting given the time and effort. My teaching style is simple and easy to understand that gives you confidence to paint in your own style.

    Joan Fullerton, 4-Day Major Workshop

Paint Yourself Free: An Acrylic Workshop

    June 29 - July 2, 2026

    9 am - 4 pm, Monday - Thursday

    Tuition Non-Members $600 / Members $550

Join Joan to learn unique techniques of laying acrylic paint using daily demonstrations, lectures, encouragement and practice with two compositions per day. You’ll learn how to coax hints of reality from an abstract background, how to control values and colors for emotional emphasis, and how to suggest rather than delineate.

An attitude of “play” in this workshop will allow for greater innovation as we become relaxed and receptive to the small voice of intuition and imagination.

Joan is particularly skilled at helping students discover their unique artistic voice. A multitude of approaches and techniques give beginners confidence, while more advanced students will benefit from Joan’s insightful solutions to their artistic challenges.

    MATERIALS LIST:  HERE

Biography: Joan holds BFA and MFA degrees in painting from the University of Wyoming. She was awarded the Outstanding Teaching Award while a college art instructor at Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyoming, from 1990 to 2003.  In 2003, she made the leap of faith to relocate and paint full-time in Taos, NM.  Following several successful exhibitions during her eight years in Taos, Fullerton made her mark and established her reputation as a respected artist and teacher.  In 2010, she moved to the Denver area, where she enjoys painting in the studio when not traveling to teach.

Joan's work has been in galleries, juried shows, and museums since the early 70's and has been internationally in Italy and Japan.  She is published in the 2010 edition of Open Studios Press, Visual Journeys, Art for the 21st Century, and Journeys to Abstraction #3, featured in Acrylic Artist Spring 2017, and the New Edition of the Encyclopedia of Acrylic Painting Techniques by Hazel Harrison.  She is the author of "Paint Yourself Free," an online painting course, and is a contributing author of the Amazon Bestseller, Radical Self-Love: How to Create Your Life Through Creativity.

"Painting on Location: The Art of Plein Air in Watercolor"

    Sunday, July 5

    2 pm - 3:30 pm

    Demo Artist: Alla Adams

Join us for an engaging demo featuring plein air artist Alla Adams as she shares both practical outdoor painting strategies and expressive artistic techniques. The session will begin with an overview of a functional plein air setup, including recommended materials, portable equipment, and tips for working efficiently and comfortably on location.

Participants will gain insight into how to approach composition selection, simplify complex scenes, and make confident, rapid decisions while working outdoors.

Following the setup discussion, Alla will complete a live watercolor painting demonstration from start to finish, explaining her creative process throughout each stage of the painting. Topics such as brushwork, ensuring desirable edges, value relationships, and capturing atmosphere will be explored during the presentation. Attendees will also have the opportunity to ask questions and discover techniques that can be applied to both plein air and studio painting practices. This demonstration is ideal for artists of all skill levels who are interested in the unique and rewarding experience of painting outdoors in watercolor.

Alla Adams is a plein air watercolor artist painting natural scenes and urban landscapes on location. She interprets fleeting light, atmosphere, and architectural forms through expressive washes. Adams frequently paints outdoors throughout the Houston and Gulf Coast regions, exploring both quiet natural settings and vibrant city scenes. In addition to her artistic practice, she serves as the Plein Air Coordinator for the Watercolor Art Society of Houston, where she organizes outdoor painting events. She also serves on the WAS-H Board as Membership Co-Director, helping foster a welcoming environment for watercolor artists of all experience levels.

This registration is for both In-Person attendance and Live-Stream.

Below are a few helpful YouTube video demos you can practice with at home before attending the event on location. I typically watch the full demonstration first to understand the process and take notes on key techniques. Then, I replay the video and paint along with it. One of the things I appreciate most about YouTube demos is the flexibility - they can be paused or rewound, allowing me to learn and paint at my own pace.

I hope you enjoy practicing in advance and are excited about our topic – nocturnal watercolor painting in Plein Air!

    Steal Like an Artist

    Monday, July 13

    1 pm - 4 pm

Moderators: Cheryl Evans and Susan Giannantonio

    Members $20, Non-Members $25

Choose a favorite artist. Consider someone very different from your own style. Bring print example(s) of your artist’s work. During this session REALLY study her/his work and try your hand at what you love about it. Plan to paint in that style for the afternoon. Hint: take this as literally as you wish. Use it as a slight influence or jump in with both feet and channel your artist.

For more of a challenge, use your own photo reference to depict your artist’s style or instead, if you prefer, copy your artist’s actual work. Either is encouraged. Copying other artists is legal, has been practiced throughout art history (i.e. Picasso studying Van Gogh), and is encouraged so long as you don’t take credit for the references.

    Your choice of mediums.

This creative encounter is designed to meet the needs of the intermediate and advanced artists wanting to elevate their work to the next level by meeting monthly to explore a specific art challenge or subject.

The challenge will be presented by the moderators, but NO FORMAL INSTRUCTION will be provided, and ALL artist fees will go directly to WAS-H.

This is an “a-la-carte” event and each month participants must register and pay for the session on the WAS-H web site to reserve a space in the Out of Your Comfort Zone Encounter.

Creativity, growth, and pushing the boundaries will be celebrated!

Safety Alert: Individuals attending this activity should be aware that they require the ability to safely descend stairs in an emergency.

This Plein Air event will focus on drawing and painting a building in an artistic representation of a city or urban area.

      Our Motto:  Progress over Perfection

Painting buildings in watercolor allows to capture the unique features and atmosphere of architectural structures. The fluidity of watercolor is perfect for capturing the mood and weather conditions around the building from sunny days to rainy scenes. This medium helps convey both the structure and the feeling of the place, bringing the building to life.

The Heights Neighborhood Library building has a pink Stucco Italian Renaissance Revival façade and arches in its doors and windows. It was built in 1926. In 1984 the building attained landmark status when it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2005 it was designated a protected city of Houston landmark.

Historic Houses in the East End Historic District of Galveston

      Our Motto:  Progress over Perfection

This Plein Air event will focus on drawing and painting a building in an artistic representation of a historic district area.

Additional information is emailed to those who register.

Painting buildings in watercolor allows us to capture the unique features and atmosphere of architectural structures. The fluidity of watercolor is perfect for capturing the mood and weather conditions around the building from sunny days to rainy scenes. This medium helps convey both the structure and the feeling of the place, bringing the building to life.

Galveston wears its history proudly - in intricate woodwork, iron balconies, and tree-lined streets that have stood the test of time. We will explore the East End Historic District, where Victorian-era homes reflect the island’s 19th-century prosperity.
