Continually challenging yourself to grow as an artist, this class aims to introduce students to the principles of composition and provide them with the necessary skills to analyze and critique artwork effectively.

Through practical exercises, demos, and discussions, students will develop a critical eye to evaluate and provide constructive feedback on artwork. Class begins with a group critique setting on what the student is currently working on.  The class will then move to simple exercises as a warm- up. Experimenting and trying new things is key to progression in your process and style development as an artist  – it's an essential part of the creative process!

Do you want to push your painting, define your style, and create a body of work that is cohesive and personal? This will be a student-driven class, with more of a coaching/critique vibe, helping each artist work towards a simple goal – to find their “path” whether it be realistic or abstract, portraits, landscapes, still-life based….. whatever it is that inspires you. This class is not a “how-to” class. We will discuss concepts, artistic principles, techniques, color schemes that will help each artist regardless of their style and subject and often paint together to learn a new technique. Ideally, we become a consistent group, whose input is varied and meaningful. The idea is that you will focus on a subject and approach to carry your ideas forward in a connected way. Work outside class is essential.

    Level: Intermediate, Advanced

    Supply List

Please bring regular watercolor supplies, palette, brushes, paper, paper towels, pencil, eraser, sponges, water sprayer etc.

Be prepared to paint outside of class, so that we can critique during class time and keep your painting goals on track.

    Plein Air for Members

    Alla Adams, Coordinator

    Saturday, Sept 13

    10 am - 2 pm

Cypress Alamo. Address: 12715 Telge Rd., Cypress, TX 77429

Entry is free. No reservations are required, except for those rarely closed days that are listed on the website.

Additional information regarding meeting location, etc. will be emailed to those who register before the event.

This Plein Air event will focus on buildings, garden, and water pond.

The Alamo full-size replica in Cypress located just northwest of Houston. It is a popular location for wedding photography and enjoying the natural beauty of well maintained grounds.

The Plein Air Coordinator will submit a “photography liability waiver” form to this venue, the only requirement for an organized group to visit for recreation, photography, visiting, or any other reason. Individual visitors do not need any forms. The concern is that there could be snakes on grounds. There are a lot of ponds, water, wooden picturesque bridges, gazebos, so there could be snakes. However, when I visited this month, I saw well-groomed landscape and meticulously maintained grounds.

To be on a cautious side, I would suggest closed sturdy shoes or boots and long thick fabric pants.

The grounds also feature the Little White Chapel and moss-filled oaks.

This Plein Air event will focus on painting a building, garden, and water pond.

Below are a few helpful YouTube video demos you can practice with at home before attending the event on location. I typically watch the full demonstration first to understand the process and take notes on key techniques. Then, I replay the video and paint along with it. One of the things I appreciate most about YouTube demos is the flexibility - they can be paused or rewound, allowing me to learn and paint at my own pace.

I hope you enjoy practicing in advance and are excited about our topic – painting building, garden, and water pond in Plein Air!

Learning to Draw & Paint with Gouache

    Arthur Deatly

    4-Week Class

    Wednesday Nights

    October 1, 8, 15 & 22

    6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

    $220 Tuition/$180 members

Discover the vibrant possibilities of gouache in this hands-on four-week course with artist Arthur Deatly. Designed for both beginners and experienced painters, the class emphasizes the discipline of drawing and painting from direct observation.

Working primarily from still life arrangements, you’ll strengthen your skills in composition, proportion, scale, cropping, and chiaroscuro. Along the way, you’ll explore the unique qualities of gouache alongside watercolor and graphite (ideally using a ¼" graphite block). Instruction will cover techniques for layering, blending, and building rich, opaque color while balancing line, value, and form.

During the first two sessions, Arthur will provide still life materials. In the final two sessions, students are encouraged to bring meaningful objects from home, adding a personal dimension to their paintings. By the end of the course, you’ll have both the confidence and tools to create expressive works using gouache and direct observation.

No need to purchase lots of paint!  By using a limited number of colors, you will be able to achieve dramatic values with optimum impact.

Supplies Students should bring to class:

Gouache:  Winsor Newton & Holbein (has UV protection)

     Topic:  Summer Landscapes

Pick a subject from supplied examples or hopefully your own from vacations. Let’s design some paintings using the basics to create distance:

baseline, zigzag, or the good old diagonal to lead us in to the painting. Then let’s talk about greens. Bring your regular palette but be be sure to include some of the following colors-sepia, burnt sienna, raw sienna, aureolin and blues(cobalt, cerulean, French ultramarine, winsor green blue shade). Let’s mix some new greens and not depend on tube greens so you won’t buy anymore!

VIRTUAL:  Welcome To Watercolor - The Very Start

    Jason M. Bentley

    4 Sessions over two weeks

    Tuesday and Thursday

    Oct 7 & 9 and 14 & 16

    9am - Noon

    $220 non-members/$180 members

Experience Level: No experience or beginner.

This course is designed for those with little or no experience in watercolor. First and foremost, it’s all about committing a few rules to memory, being adventurous, and willing to work with a little of the unexpected as you practice! Starting from the very beginning, on the first day, we will talk about different materials uses and surfaces - both the ones I recommend, and the ones you may already have or have questions about. The following three days we will work on techniques and small projects that present basic pigment mixing, brush technique, paint control, and surface handling. Afterwards, with a big confidence boost, you’ll be ready to tackle your next projects! Are you swimming in questions like “how do I…?” Then this class is for you.

This open and interactive course will spotlight my palette, work surface, and reference in real time, so you can directly see how I mix and apply paint. Questions are encouraged at any time. At the start of each day, special short demonstrations from any inquiries will be addressed, and then intermittently to describe the project process from start to finish.

Jason is a contemporary realist painter with many years' experience in watercolor.  Click HERE to see more.

    $180 Tuition/$150 members

VIRTUAL: The Behavior of Color - Palette Mastery

    Jason M. Bentley

    Tuesday, Oct 21

    9:00 am - 12:00 pm Central Time

    $50 members/$60 non-members

Levels:  No Experience, Beginner and Intermediate Painters

Consider this a crash course! You can write books on color theory for artists, and there are plenty… But this class is designed to teach you how to control the dial of color change and intensity. Understanding the color wheel and how each of our pigments are positioned tells a lot about mixing behaviors. Ever get that muddy color you didn’t expect? You’ll get to know how it happened, and how to avoid it.

Mixing the right color doesn’t have to be a mystery. With a bit of knowledge about certain pigments and their characteristics, we can develop an instinct for efficiently and accurately mixing color. In this workshop we’ll talk about the universality of primaries, and the warming, cooling, and neutralizing of hues. Most importantly, we’ll evaluate the role of tinting and shading while still maintaining richness of chroma… Or not… The point is we’re in control!

This open and interactive course will spotlight my palette, work surface, and reference in real time, so you can directly see how I mix and apply paint. Questions are encouraged at any time. At the start of each day, special short demonstrations from any inquiries will be addressed, and then intermittently to describe the project process from start to finish.

I hope you enjoy practicing in advance and are excited about our topic – nocturnal watercolor painting in Plein Air!

Safety Alert: Individuals attending this activity should be aware that they require the ability to safely descend stairs in an emergency.

A Different Approach to Painting the Nude

Loosen up and trust your instincts. Paint the figure in bold non-naturalistic colors Taking inspiration from Rodin’s and O’keeffe’s watercolor sketches (She did go through a figurative period early in her career.) this course concentrates on painting the figure starting with a “mass gesture” rather than contour or construction lines. We will concentrate first on capturing the figure as a whole and then will add details to it.

We will begin with lots of bold gesture studies in brush and ink, move from there to a full range of values in monochrome, then a limited 2 color palette and finally a limited 3 primary color palette plus black.

To keep the cost down, we will be working from reference photos rather than a live model.

Painting clouds in watercolor is a delightful way to enjoy the soft and ethereal qualities of this medium. The transparency of watercolor allows for a beautiful play of light, giving clouds a realistic, luminous quality. Experimenting with different techniques can result in a range of cloud formations, from wispy cirrus to dramatic storm clouds. Also, if you can paint a good sky, it really takes your work to another level. It sets the mood for the scene. There is something special and inspiring about cloud arrangements, towering clouds… how they just pass each other, changing every minute.

      December 6, 2025

9:00 am -12:00 pm Central Time

      $50 members/$60 non-members

In this workshop I will teach you how to simplify scenes and take the fear out of painting people, to see things as simple shapes and eliminate unnecessary detail. We will work with a limited palette and I will teach how to paint wet in wet, dry brush, and the importance of the water to pigment ratio. At the end of the class you will go home with a completed painting and the confidence to put people in your own paintings.

My paintings are inspired by the effect of light and shadow on our environment, creating dynamic shapes and colours. I especially enjoy painting people going about their everyday lives, and I hope to inspire you to see future paintings everywhere you look.

Links to a video recording of each session will be provided, should you miss a class or want to review a session. Links remain available for 120 days.

I hope you enjoy practicing in advance and are excited about our topic – nocturnal watercolor painting in Plein Air!

      Bringing it all together!

      Carla Gauthier, Instructor

      Saturday, February 21

      9:30 am- 3:30 pm

      $85 Regular Tuition

      $75 Member Tuition

This class is designed with beginners in mind, but all are welcome to join. Participants will also earn five credits toward our Beginners Watercolor Academy program.

Refine your watercolor skills in this class -- tie everything together that you've learn in our core classes—drawing, composition, color, texture, and technique. With step-by-step guidance, you’ll plan, sketch, and complete a finished watercolor painting that reflects your personal style and vision.

Photos can often feel overwhelming—so many shapes, colors, and textures—but any subject can be broken down into manageable steps. In this class, you'll learn how to analyze your reference photo and translate it into a clear, structured painting plan. Whether you're working with a landscape, floral, or portrait—and whether your style is abstract, impressionistic, or realistic—you’ll gain techniques that empower you to paint with confidence.

We’ll focus on creating unified, harmonious compositions with strong focal points. A guided exercise will help reinforce these concepts, giving you tools you can take back to your studio practice.

      What to Bring:

      • Your usual watercolor supplies

      • Pencil and watercolor paper (about 11" x 15", or quarter sheet)

      • One or two reference photos you love but feel unsure how to approach

If time allows, we’ll review your reference photos together and discuss strategies for turning them into successful paintings.

Safety Alert: Individuals attending this activity should be aware that they require the ability to safely descend stairs in an emergency.
