The Art History of Watercolor

Dr. Anna Tahinci

Two-Week Class

August 6 and 13, Thursday mornings

9 am - 12 pm

Tuition $130 Tuition / $110 Members

This two-session art history workshop will take us on a journey in the fascinating history of watercolor from prehistoric caves to the present. In this richly illustrated and engaging workshop, we will trace the evolution of watercolor painting across centuries and cultures, exploring how artists from Dürer to Winslow Homer and modern and contemporary watercolorists have been pushing the boundaries of the medium. We will learn how to discuss watercolors in relation to their formal elements (line, space, light and color, form, texture, and pattern) and their principles of design (balance, scale, proportion, rhythm, unity, and variety). Students will develop observational skills through visual and verbal examination and analysis. Analyzing watercolors from the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston will be an integral part of the workshop. No previous experience necessary: come curious, leave inspired!

Level: All levels

No supplies needed (handouts will be provided).

Safety Alert: Individuals attending this activity should be aware that they require the ability to safely descend stairs in an emergency.
