Kempner Park in Galveston

Established in 1876 by a group of German businessmen, the park was originally known as the Galveston Garten Verein, translating to "garden club" in German. A centerpiece of Kempner Park is the Garten Verein Pavilion, an elaborate tiered octagonal dancing pavilion constructed in 1880. This historic structure has withstood significant events, including the devastating 1900 hurricane and a fire in the 1980s. It was restored in 1981 and further refurbished in 1998 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Harris and Eliza Kempner Fund. Kempner Park with surrounding areas is a charming and peaceful location that offers wonderful opportunities to study form, light, and composition.

Format of the event: We will paint from 11:00 am to 2:30 pm. (I suggest arriving earlier to set up). At about 2:30 pm we will gather to review our paintings and provide constructive feedback to each other. Those who would like to join for lunch will go to The Sunflower Bakery & Café (512 14th Street, Galveston, Texas 77550; phone: (409) 763-5500).

Directions: I recommend using your navigator to direct you to Kempner Park, located at 2704 Avenue O, Galveston.

Parking: free parking on nearby streets immediately adjacent to the park’s green space.

Text or call (713) 557-7495 if any questions.

Below are some helpful YouTube video demos to practice at home before going to this event on location. With YouTube videos, I usually first watch the entire demo to see the result and make notes of important points. Then, I start the video again and paint along. I like the convenience of YouTube demos that can be paused, and so I can paint and learn at my pace.

I hope you enjoy practicing in advance and are excited about our topic – painting historic buildings in Plein Air!
