A Different Approach to Painting the Nude

Paint the figure in bold non-naturalistic colors Taking inspiration from Rodin’s and O’keeffe’s watercolor sketches (She did go through a figurative period early in her career.) this course concentrates on painting the figure starting with a “mass gesture” rather than contour or construction lines. We will concentrate first on capturing the figure as a whole and then will add details to it. We will begin with lots of bold gesture studies in brush and ink, move from there to a full range of values in monochrome, then a limited 2 color palette and finally a limited 3 primary color palette plus black. To keep the cost down, we will be working from reference photos rather than a live model.
