SKETCH OUT with Houston Urban Sketchers

Meet at the Menil Museum Grounds
Free event
Let’s celebrate! The Watercolor Art Society – Houston and the Houston chapter of Urban Sketchers are teaming up to commemorate International Urban Sketch Week with a Sketch Out at the Menil Museum. Sketchers of all levels are welcome to immerse themselves in the joy of capturing life's moments one drawing at a time.
Starting with a meet-up on the Museum grounds, participants will embark on a creative journey. Following a quick introduction, sketchers can roam freely, seeking inspiration within the museum's grounds and inside exhibits. For those seeking guidance, Richard Scruggs will lead a discussion and demonstration on crafting narratives, staking out a composition, and initiating the foundational sketch. Whether joining the discussion or not, everyone will have approximately two hours to weave their visual tales. Later, we'll regroup for a USK throwdown, where we'll proudly showcase our creations, divulge our techniques, and unveil the stories behind our sketches.
Following the artistic escapade, all are welcome to unwind at a nearby restaurant for lunch and conversation about art, techniques, and a friendly exchange of sketchbooks.
Here you will find a list of materials to bring with you.
If it rains, we’ll sketch inside. Here are the directions in case it rains:
- We’ll meet outside the Sul Ross St, entrance shown in the picture below. We’ll be to the left of the entrance under the roof of the walkway.
- There will no demo / discussion at the start if we are inside.
If we are sketching inside, the Museum may not allow water media. Be prepared to work in pencil, pen & ink, or markers.
