This online course will focus on learning about using gouache paint as a watercolor with opacity, creating a small floral still life painting using gouache. Paintings may be created on individual sheets of paper or inside a sketchbook. Get your feet wet without the need to invest in new paints. We will discuss local colors found on provided reference images in order to create a simplified palette.

Level: Beginner

Supply List:

  • Your usual watercolor paints PLUS one tube of white gouache, often called artist or designers gouache (NOT acrylic gouache). Winsor & Newton and Schmincke are my favorite brands.
  • Mixed Media or Watercolor paper sheets, or a spiral bound sketchbook with perforated paper - 5.5” x 8.5” (I prefer Canson or Strathmore)
  • Brushes: 3+ Watercolor brushes of various sizes. I use two round brushes (Small and medium sized) and one small-ish flat brush.
  • Palette Knife: 1 small palette knife that you’ll be using to mix paint on your paint tray. Rounded or pointed end - whichever you prefer.
  • Paint tray: Plastic or metal. You’ll want enough space to mix paints.
  • Graphite pencils: H, 2B, 6B
  • Small spray bottle (I use a travel bottle with a pump spray)
  • Water cup (A large plastic yogurt container works very well!)
  • Paper towels, or lotion-free tissues
