Maps are all around us, from our GPS to the blueprint of our homes to the mental maps that guide us through the obstacle course of life. Maps orient us, guide us, and inform us, and they can tell a rich story of people, place, and culture. In this class, we will explore different kinds of representational and metaphorical maps as well as their components, including cartouche, compass rose, legend, symbols, and more. We will practice sketching and adding watercolor to a variety of maps and students will gain an appreciation for mapmaking as a tool for urban sketching, personal reflection, ethnographic study, and decorative illustration. No mapmaking experience is needed and all levels of artists are welcome, including first-time beginners!

Level: all

Note: This class will also be streamed in our Virtual Classroom, for those who can't attend in person.  See accompanying link to register for that one.
