Photos help us remember what we have experienced - and they inspire us to create art that puts us back in that place! But how do we take what we need from a photo, simplify and funnel it down to its essence, so our message is clear, that our inspiration is communicated?
We need to decide on the focal point, what to exaggerate, what to minimize or discard completely, and ideas that will keep you on track to carry this through to completion. This will be a two week class. A write up, photo and traceable drawing will be sent to you beforehand, so that you can paint along if you wish. During our first class, I will cover the basics of how I work with photos, what I am looking for, where I depart from the reference. I will show a variety of photos, what will work, what I may tweak, what I will edit out, explaining options as we go and the reasons for my choices. Then I will start painting with the photo in mind, making necessary changes, and finishing the painting during this demo. You will be either painting along, or during the week between classes, then uploading your work to a site that allows us all to see what you have been working on. There is both an opportunity for feedback on your work, answers to questions and mini demonstrations that allow for a polished finish to your individual work.
Note: Please note that registration will close Monday, September 21 at noon Central Time. Please register early. Handouts and ZOOM links will be mailed to all participants after registration closes.
