VIRTUAL - Painting bright lights and shimmering dark with watercolor: how to approach subjects with a wide tonal range

Ksenia Annis

November 21

10:00 - 12:00 Central Time

$40

Do you have favorite photos with candles burning in the dark, a shimmering Christmas tree, a house at night with windows all aglow? Have you wondered how to paint the lights so they really shine in your painting and how to keep the dark areas from looking dull and flat? In this class we will learn how to approach subjects with a wide tonal range - from brightest light to darkest dark. We will talk about ways to analyze and verify tonal relationships before and during painting, as well as discover techniques and color mixes to achieve deep, shimmering dark passages that will delight your viewers. First hour of the class will be dedicated to explanation and a demo. During the second hour students will start painting a festive still life from a provided photo (that can later make a great holiday gift) or work from their own favorite reference.

Note: Please note that registration will close November 19 at noon Central Time. Please register early.

Level: Beginner

Materials: a set of watercolors, round and flat brushes, watercolor paper (300 lb is strongly recommended), spray bottle, 2 water containers, paper towels, a piece of charcoal and a pencil, white Artist Gouache or white ink (for touchups).
