TAKING THE NEXT STEPS TO PAINTING WITH WATERCOLORS - Robin Avery

Wednesday mornings,
March 13, 20, 27, April 3
9:00am-12:00pm.    $150

We’ve learned some basics and now we are ready to express ourselves on paper with glorious paints and perky brushes!   This is part two for those students who have basic knowledge of paint, brushes, paper and techniques and basic understanding of value.  We will focus on composing successful paintings while still learning basic painting skills.

This is a beginner to intermediate class.

Supply List:

  • Plastic Watercolor Palette with a lid
  • Natural sponge
  • Paper towels
  • Gray watercolor pencil
  • yardstick
  • kneaded eraser
  • Brushes -- fewer good brushes is a better idea than lots of inexpensive brushes. There are many good brands. I prefer Stephen Quiller brushes but use others too. I will let you try out many of mine for you to decide from the first class.
    • #10 round   # 6 round
    • 1 to 2 inch flat wash brush
  • Paper -- Good paper is important. Buy smaller sized paper to start out with. A block of paper will keep you from having to stretch your paper. Arches, Fabriano are good brands. Most people buy cold press 140 weight.  Remember Art Supply on Main gives Wash members a discount and Hobby Lobby's 40% coupon is good for buying Fabriano paper or kneaded erasers etc.
  • Paint -- Less good paint is better than lots of student grade paint. Student grade has a lot of filler in it.  This list includes one warm and one cool paint in each of the three primary colors.  These are needed for successful color mixing.
    • Yellow: Winsor Yellow or Aureolin Yellow
    •             New Gamboge
    • Red: Permanent Rose or Rose Madder
    •          Cadmium Red or Winsor Red
    • Blue: Ultramarine Blue
    •           Cobalt blue

_______________ To be added later______________________________

  • Burnt Sienna (winsor newton brand)
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Winsor Green and winsor blue......or Thalo blue  Thalo Green
  • Graflix Incredible Art Board from Amazon....used as a support and to stretch paper.....
