Ready to loosen up and let chance inspire your creativity? Painting Roulette! is an experimental, non-objective mixed-media experience where prompts guide you through the process of creating a painting without worrying about the end result. You’ll layer, scrape, stamp, draw, collage, and play with color and texture using acrylics and a variety of tools and materials.

Bring at least two surfaces to experiment with—paper, board, or canvas—and whatever paints, brushes, markers, and collage materials you have on hand. Try gesso on one surface and leave another unprimed to see how each responds. Come ready to experiment, take some creative risks, and have fun discovering where the process takes you!

Supplies are all optional. Bring what you have.

Supports:

Work as large as you are comfortable. Paper, canvas, any preferred support. It is fun to do a large painting! I suggest at least 16 x 20” paper, board or canvas.  12 x 12” would work. Bring at least 2 substrates.  You might want to experiment by applying gesso to 1 and leaving the other one plain.  Each has its own properties and you may discover you prefer one over the other.

Paints:

Demo will be primarily acrylics. You may bring any of the following: fluid, ink, heavy body and/or even craft paint

A few colors, perhaps 1 or 2 triads (red, blue, yellow) plus black and white. Demo will use gesso for white.  If you want to bring more, you are welcome to do so. Even metallics are a fun embellishment.

Painting tools:

A variety of brushes. Challenge yourself to go big with brushes that are appropriately large enough to fit your substrate. Chip brushes, liner, mop. The important thing is a variety but you only need perhaps 3 or 4.

Credit card, catalyst wedge or putty knife for spreading

Any other unusual paint applicator: stamp, scraper, palette knife, fine line applicator, makeup brush

Markers of any kind: Caran d’ache, Inktense pencils, posca or other acrylic markers

Misc tools:

Small quantity of any ephemera: newspaper, music manuscript, magazine, handwritten notes/letters

Gel or matte medium or PVA glue

1 to 2” Chip brush for gluing
