Single color paintings can be great practice for composition or subject studies, and pretty cool looking finished paintings in their own right! They help us more with what we need to know about modeling form by freeing us from multicolor complexities. And we are all the more ready to tackle the topic of color more effectively when we understand these changing values (light and dark relationships). This is an excellent class for those interested in starting portraiture but don’t yet have much experience!

In this workshop we will sketch and paint a portrait using Payne’s Gray and no additional colors to describe the form. Recognizing value relationships over changing hue will be emphasized, along with drawing basic structure and proportions of the face and head for great results.

This open and interactive course will spotlight my palette, work surface, and reference in real time, so you can directly see how I mix and apply paint. Questions are encouraged at any time. At the start of each day, special short demonstrations from any inquiries will be addressed, and then intermittently to describe the project process from start to finish.

    - Links to a video recording of each session will be provided, if you miss a class or want to review a session. Links remain available for 90 days.

    - Reference photo(s) in the confirmation email should be printed out or plan to use in class on a separate device before the workshop
