With the exception of other mediums that lend themselves well to the direct painting approach, watercolor is best suited to a bit of pre-paint planning and design.

A basic understanding of drawing is essential to any painting program. In this class we will learn the constructive principles of drawing, and apply them to develop space and form in still-life, landscapes, and the portrait, specifically tailored for the art of watercolor painting.

Day 1: Tools, principles, and elements of design

Topics:

  • Understanding the range of pencils, erasures, and blenders.
  • Hand positions and control of the pencil
  • Using helpful guides and optical measuring for building shapes, from simple to complex

Project: From a photo provided - Draw a still-life

Day 2: Drawing in space

Topics:

  •  1 and 2 point perspective
  • Developing composition
  • Knowing what and what not to draw for maximum effectiveness

Project: From a photo provided - Draw a simple landscape with a building

Day 3: Anatomy of the Portrait

Topics:

  • Understanding the use of construct drawing and cannon of proportions
  • How to improve upon the gesture of elements to achieve a likeness
