A basic understanding of drawing is essential to any painting program. In this class we will learn the constructive principles of drawing, and apply them to develop space and form in still-life, landscapes, and the portrait, specifically tailored for the art of watercolor painting. Day 1: Tools, principles, and elements of design Topics: Understanding the range of pencils, erasures, and blenders. Hand positions and control of the pencil Using helpful guides and optical measuring for building shapes, from simple to complex Project: From a photo provided - Draw a still-life Day 2: Drawing in space Topics: 1 and 2 point perspective Developing composition Knowing what and what not to draw for maximum effectiveness Project: From a photo provided - Draw a simple landscape with a building Day 3: Anatomy of the Portrait Topics: Understanding the use of construct drawing and cannon of proportions How to improve upon the gesture of elements to achieve a likeness Project: From a photo provided - Draw a portrait with singular light Supply List: Essential Drawing for the Painting Practice Links to a video recording of each session will be provided, should you miss a class or want to review a session.
