July 20 & 21

9:30 am - 3:30 pm

$170 Regular Tuition

$150 WAS-H Members Tuition

Semi-Abstracted Florals:  Day 1 will be Fun! Rae will show students how she designs her close focus florals to be exciting, using a wet-into-wet approach. She discusses balance and imbalance, design, composition and how to use the light with a playful use of color and value contrast.

Waterscapes:  Day 2 we will do a waterscape (small waterfalls) in a Landscape setting. Rae will concentrate on depth and how she leaves the white of the paper, a trademark process of hers.

** Rae’s loose style of painting will be a feature in this lesson using her method of working a painting in sections, to maintain the white of the paper.

Students will work from photos involving waterfalls (close focus), rocks, foliage. Nothing too distant or panoramic, we want to bring the viewer right into the painting.

Supply list:

Paper: #140 Cold Press Paper either Arches or Baohong

Brushes: Bring what you have. Recommended brushes are:

  • Silver Black Velvet brand especially the 3/8” Dagger (also called a Striper brush, (I use it in every painting)
  • #8 Round.( I also use this in all my works)
  • Wide Wash brush at least 2” and this can be synthetic.
  • A fine line Rigger or Liner brush approx. #2 or #3

Paints: Professional artist tube paints. Daniel Smith (DS), Winsor Newton (WN).  Recommended colors are:

Lemon Yellow (DS)

Cadmium Yellow Medium (WN)

Aussie Red Gold (DS)

Quinacridone Coral (DS)

Permanent Rose (WN)

Permanent Magenta (WN)

Permanent Sap Green (WN)

Pthalo Green Turquoise (DS) or

Turquoise (made by Lucas) almost the same as the DS Pthalo Green Turquoise

Cobalt Blue (DS)

French Ultramarine Blue (DS)

Burnt Sienna (WN)

** These are just my favorite colors, however bring what you have already. If you are purchasing new colors, this list is a suggestion only.

Miscellaneous:

2B pencil and eraser

** If you have a white Charcoal Pencil or white watercolor pencil that can be handy as well (optional)

Paper Towels (Rae uses Viva) and/or Kleenex

Each student will get individual and personal attention and gentle guidance with their work.

** Bring reference photos if you have some, Rae will also have some to share. Have either hard copy photo of the flower or use a device with a big enough screen to see it.

For the floral study you will need clear close focus studies mostly for the shape of the flower. Try not to choose a too complicated flower. Rae suggests Calla Lily, Tulips, Poppies, Camellias, or similar open flowers.

For the waterscape, bring photos of water tumbling over rocks to bring the viewer right into the painting.
