Level: Novice, Beginner, and Intermediate With the exception of other mediums that lend themselves well to the direct painting approach, watercolor is best suited to a bit of pre-paint planning and design. A basic understanding of drawing is essential to any painting program. In this class we will learn the constructive principles of drawing, and apply them to develop space and form in still-life, landscapes, and the portrait, specifically tailored for the art of painting. Week 1: Tools and principles Topics: Understanding the range of pencils, erasures, and blenders. Hand positions and control of the pencil Using helpful guides and optical measuring for building simple and complex shapes Project: Draw a collection of stand alone objects with a convincing mass Week 2: Elements of Design Topics: 1 and 2 point perspective The importance of line, shape, space, value, and relative position Project: Bringing our elements together to draw a stilllife Week 3: Atmosphere Topics: Detail effectiveness and illusion of distance Project: Drawing for a simple landscape Week 4: Anatomy for the Portrait Topics: Understanding the individual features Construction of features and measurements for the head Project: Drawing a simple portrait Click here for the Supply List
