WAS-H is excited to host two focused workshops in January 2019 from visiting Texas artist Michael Holter. Michael's work has received numerous awards and recognition and can be found in private and corporate collections in the US and several foreign countries. He is a signature member of The National Watercolor Society, The Transparent Watercolor Society of America, The Outdoor Painter Society, the Southwestern Watercolor Society and The Society of Watercolor Artists. He is also a member of the American Watercolor Society, the Portrait Society of America and the American Impressionist Society. See videos of how Michael paints here.

From Herb Reed, past president of Southwestern Watercolor Society: "For the past dozen years I have facilitated and/or participated in more than 20 watercolor workshops, as an officer of SWS and as a principal in a local gallery. Michael's recent workshop was one of the top few that "really made a difference" in the way that I approach painting. Take it... you will learn about design and composition, techniques, and hints on taking reference photos -- all for turning out terrific watercolor portraits."

Creating Watercolor Portraits from Photos

Monday, January 14 - Wednesday, January 16, 2019

Many artists have an unnatural aversion to painting people, yet we know there is an attraction to the human form when viewing a painting. Not only does including people in artwork add interest and connection to the viewer, it takes the same skills as painting a landscape or still life. The method Michael demonstrates and instructs you in will take you through the necessary steps to achieve your goals and give you tools to create a well-structured representation while still allowing for the expressive use of color and brushstroke.

Michael's workshop will include insightful discussion of important aspects of figurative work such as composition and capturing a mood. You will spend time on exercises designed to heighten your techniques. There will be real-time demonstrations as well as high-speed video demos of Michael working in his studio. Students of all levels and interests will enjoy Michael's personal and up-front style of teaching as well as his inspirational approach to his work. Students will leave prepared and challenged to move on to a new level of confidence in painting portraits in watercolor.

This workshop will focus on the use of watercolor to paint exciting impressionistic paintings. You paint from photographs and will explore the use of light and shadow to create interesting compositions and achieve dynamic results.

We will examine the fundamentals of watercolor painting to assure that all students are familiar with the techniques. Daily discussions and application of the principles and elements of design will be woven into your painting experience.

Each day you will engage in exercises that will solidify the content that you are working on and spend time viewing other artists work. We will discuss the methods and the impact that these artists achieve using their techniques.

Michael will demonstrate his approach to creating  landscapes and show you several high-speed video demonstrations.

And you will have ample time to successfully complete your own paintings.

Michael welcomes novice and advanced students and tailors the experience to individual needs.
