    Find Your Path

    Carla Gauthier

    Thursday Afternoons

    Sept 12, 19, 26, Oct 3

    1:00 - 4:00pm

    $220 Tuition/$180 members

Do you want to push your painting, define your style, and create a body of work that is cohesive and personal? This will be a student-driven class, with more of a coaching/critique vibe, helping each artist work towards a simple goal – to find their “path” whether it be realistic or abstract, portraits, landscapes, still-life based - whatever it is that inspires you. This class is not a “how-to” class. We will discuss concepts, artistic principles that will help each artist regardless of their style and subject, and do demos that are spontaneous, responding to student problems and needs. Ideally, we become a consistent group, whose input is varied and meaningful. The idea is that you will focus on a subject and approach to carry your ideas forward in a connected way. Work outside class is essential.

    Topic:  Historical Buildings

    Location:  Heights Library

    1302 Heights Building

    Houston, TX 77008

    Free and for members only.

Additional information is emailed to those who register.

Painting buildings in watercolor allows to capture the unique features and atmosphere of architectural structures. The fluidity of watercolor is perfect for capturing the mood and weather conditions around the building from sunny days to rainy scenes. This medium helps convey both the structure and the feeling of the place, bringing the building to life.

The Heights Neighborhood Library building has a pink Stucco Italian Renaissance Revival façade and arches in its doors and windows. It was built in 1926. In 1984 the building attained landmark status when it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2005 it was designated a protected city of Houston landmark.

This Plein Air event will focus on drawing and painting a building in an artistic representation of a city or urban area.

Below are some helpful YouTube video demos to practice at home before going to this event on location. With YouTube videos, I usually first watch the entire demo to see the result and make notes of important points. Then, I start the video again and paint along. I like the convenience of YouTube demos that they can be paused and so I can paint and learn in my pace.

I hope you enjoy practicing in advance and are excited about our topic – painting a building in a cityscape in Plein Air!

    Sunday afternoon

    October 6

    1:30 - 5:30pm

    $65 members/$75 non-members

Getting the right color doesn’t have to be a bundle of trial and error. With a bit of knowledge about pigments and their characteristics, we can develop an instinct for efficiently and accurately mixing color. There will be focus on the important and universal role of mixtures formed from primaries, with evaluation on how other tube colors relate in the spectrum. We will explore the warming, cooling, and neutralizing of hues, as well as tinting and shading techniques that maintain richness of chroma... Or not... The point is we’re in control! This open and interactive course will spotlight the instructor’s palette, work surface, and reference in real time, so you can directly see exactly how he mixes and applies paint. The process will be step by step based with short demos so you can take time to follow along and ask questions all the way to the finished painting.

Links to a video recording of each session will be provided, should you miss a class or want to review a session. Links remain available for

    Kathleen Conover

    Major Workshop

    Chaos to Order:  Experimental Watermedia

    October 7 - 9

    9 am - 4 pm daily

    Tuition: Members $500

    Nonmembers $550

WAS-H is thrilled to welcome master artist Kathleen Conover to teach a Major Workshop!  Kathleen’s CHAOS to ORDER: Experimental Watermedia workshop, October 7-10, 2024, promises to inspire and challenge. Kathleen also will serve as juror and judge for this year's Annual Members Exhibit (AME).

Kathleen’s work has been juried into more than 200 exhibitions, receiving national and international recognition for the vision, innovative techniques, and fearless expression that characterize her unique designs.

Painting from an early age, Kathleen was influenced by teachers and artists in the fertile environment of Southern California’s prominent artists, museums and galleries as well as by early international travels. She studied undergraduate fine arts at San Diego State University, finished her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Washington in Seattle and earned her Master of Arts in Fine Art degree from Northern Michigan University. Continued study with American master watercolor artists over the next decade enriched her depth, understanding, skill and personal painting style. To learn more about Kathleen click on this link:  Conover Introduction

An introduction to Kathleen’s teaching is included in a three-part YouTube video in “Workshops” on her website, www.kathleenconover.com

Class Objectives: Demonstrations, a 9-page syllabus plus additional handouts, individual attention and independent work time will enable understanding and application of new information and processes. Specific lessons on creating exciting textures, using "Gesso Juice", layering, expressive mark making, color concepts, how to do a value study, understanding composition and more will be presented.  “Most of all,” Kathleen says, “I want to help each artist advance to the next level in their own work – no matter where they start.”

Course description: Students will create dynamic art by starting 12 paintings (11x15”) with color, texture, pattern, gestural marks and more, on day one. This may seem like “chaos,” but this practice delivers vital beginning energy that is intuitive, necessary, and fun! Strong design and composition are the elements that bring “order” to the rich starts and turn them into an attention-getting and expressive finished (at least 3) works. Beginner to advanced students welcome – students are encouraged to explore and strengthen their unique expression in realism, abstraction or non-objectivity. Students are encouraged to bring your sense of adventure and enthusiasm for this high-energy and informative workshop.

Topic:  Landscapes, Fields, Barns & People

    Location:  Round Top Antiques Fair

    Texas Highway 237

Additional information is emailed to those who register.

Painting landscapes, fields, barns, and people allows to capture the serene beauty and rural charm of the countryside. The suggested steps are: Start by sketching the basic composition, then apply soft washes to create the gentle hues of fields and skies. Add layers to build depth in the landscape, with earthy tones for barns and greenery for fields. Use fine brushstrokes to depict the texture of barn wood and the flowing movement of tall grasses. When painting people, keep the figures simple yet expressive, focusing on their gestures and interactions. Watercolor's fluidity and translucence are perfect for capturing the delicate interplay of light and shadow, bringing a sense of warmth and life to the scene.

The original Round Top Antiques Fair is the show that started it all over 50 years ago. Founded by the late Emma Lee Turney in 1968 “The Show” as known by Round Top veterans, has become one of the largest antique shows in the country. To put it perspective, take into consideration that Round Top, Texas population is only 90 people.

This Plein Air event will focus on painting landscape, fields, barns, and people.

We will explore several methods for including symbolism in art to help establish deeper meaning and communication while also learning acrylic techniques. Attendees will prep a canvas board, block in background and paint a simple composition that includes at least one item of symbolic meaning that is not the main focal point.  Instructor will bring items to spark creativity along with other reference materials. Attendees are also encouraged to bring images of symbolic meaning to them. Attendees will paint dark to light, using glazing techniques when applicable and leave with a better understanding of “shape painting” while working background to foreground.

Be prepared to come away with an acrylic painting rich in symbolism as we explore methods for diving deeper.

Painting people at a farmers market in watercolor offers a vibrant and dynamic way to capture the bustling atmosphere and rich colors of this lively setting. How to go about it? You might want to begin by sketching the market's layout, including stalls, tables, and the people. Use bright, varied washes to depict the colorful array of fruits, vegetables, and goods on display. Think about what the focal point will be in your painting. Capture the energy of the scene with loose, expressive brushstrokes, focusing on the movement and interactions of the people—shoppers browsing, vendors chatting, and children playing. Pay attention to the light, whether it is the soft morning glow or the bright midday sun, to enhance the mood. The fluid nature of watercolor allows for a fresh and spontaneous depiction, bringing the market's lively spirit to life on paper.

The Houston Farmers Market has been a staple in Houston since the early 1940s. In 2017, the market expanded from its original 3,800 square feet to more than 20,000 square feet. In addition to daily local produce, it sells a variety of imported produce, nuts, dried spices, and more.

You never know what happens at a farmers market. You might want to paint people in a loose style reflecting a busy dynamic day at a market; or someone might agree to pose for you to take a picture for a portrait. If that happens, don’t forget to ask them to pose for you for a picture in bright sunlight (with a partial shadow from a hat or a strong shadow from a dangling earring or other accessory). The fluidity of watercolor helps convey the natural glow and radiance of the subject in sunlight, creating a lively and vibrant portrait.

This Plein Air event will focus on painting people.

I hope you enjoy practicing in advance and are excited about our topic – painting people in Plein Air!

Has a scene in nature ever taken your breath away? I’m lucky to live in one of the world's most beautiful places. And this time of year offers a variety of moods, with changing weather patterns that transform the land and sky. Let me bring you to the Scottish Highlands on a virtual tour. To get us in the grove and feel inspired to paint, I’ll show you pictures and short videos that will make you feel like you’re here with me! In this two-session workshop, we will talk about color character, and moving pigment in a way that transforms the atmosphere of the land. Each day will be on the concentration of a new landscape with a unique character.

Links remain available for 120 days.

A final written critique is offered through Padlet following the completion of the workshop.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

    Topic:  Flowing Fountain

Location:   Scanlan Fountain in Sam Houston Park, 1000 Bagby Street

    Houston, TX 77002

Additional information is emailed to those who register.

Painting a flowing fountain in bright sunlight with watercolor captures the dynamic interplay of light, water, and structure. How to go about it? You might want to begin by sketching the fountain's form, paying attention to the details of its design and the surrounding environment. Use light, transparent washes to depict the sparkle of sunlight on the water, highlighting the fountain's streams and splashes. Bright, warm tones can illustrate the sunny atmosphere, while cooler, translucent blues and greens can convey the clarity and movement of the water. The contrast between the bright highlights and the deep shadows in the fountain's structure and water creates a sense of depth and realism. The fluidity of watercolor beautifully portrays the fountain's lively, ever-changing nature, capturing both the stillness of its form and the motion of the water.

Scanlan Fountain is a cast iron fountain in Sam Houston Park. The fountain was cast by J. L. Mott Iron Works in 1891 and held by a private individual before being donated to the city of Houston by the family of the owner.  It was installed in the park in 1972.

This Plein Air event will focus on painting a flowing fountain.

Wet-in-Wet – the magic of watercolor

    Carla Gauthier
    Two-Day Weekend Workshop

    November 16 & 17

    9:30am - 3:30pm

    $170 Tuition

    $150 WAS-H Members

Wet-in-wet is a technique that is unique to watercolor, a semi-controlled mingling that infuses magic into our art. To achieve a variety of edges (soft and diffused to defined and crisp) we will learn the basics of controlling water and paint mixtures, the timing of application and the magic of rewetting paper to take another swing at our paintings to get deeper and richer effects. This requires 100% cotton paper, tube pigments and patience. We will work on a group project to learn the techniques and then you can work on your individual ideas – whether it be a landscape, portrait, still life, pet, abstract – whatever floats your boat! Join us for a fun and inspiring weekend!

    1:30-5:30pm Central time
    $120 members/$140 non-members

Single color paintings can be great practice for composition or subject studies, and pretty cool looking finished paintings on their own! They help free us from multicolor complexities to focus more on what we need to know about form modeling. This is an excellent class for those interested in portraiture but don't yet have much experience!

In this workshop we will paint a portrait from the sketch provided using a color of your choice. (Link for drawing below. 9x6.5 inches) Please have ready before workshop. Recognizing value relationships over chroma will be emphasized, along with basic structure of the face and head.

Links remain available for 120 days.

Fill Your Sketchbook! Exuberant Abstract Landscape Collages

    Susan Giannantonio

    One Day Workshop

    Monday, November 25

    9:30 am - 3:30pm

    $85 Tuition/$75 members

The purpose of this class is to eliminate the trepidation of how to capture the landscape en plein air or from photo references when you get home from vacation with a million photos.

9:30 Meet for demo of materials and techniques to energetically capture color, texture and marks of the landscape.

11:00 With a strategic, simple set of tools, travel together into the local landscape to practice quick sketches (location tbd).

1:30 Return to classroom to assemble collages into your sketchbook from materials sketched en plein air.  The collages make wonderful references for future paintings and occasionally make successful paintings themselves.

This list will be used for our plein air outdoor experience (mid-day). Bring what materials you already have, no need to buy others. This can be a messy process so dress accordingly. (We love to throw paint around! When we say abstract, we mean abstract!)

9 x 12 or 11 x 14” watercolor paper, mixed media or heavy sketching paper. Nothing heavier than 135-140 lb.

    Paper towels

    Baby Wipes are nice

    Metal ruler, 12” is ideal

    Gel medium or PVA glue

    Palette knife

Variety of brushes appropriate to your medium(s)

Sketchbook, ideally 9 x 12” with heavy sketch paper, multi-media paper or

watercolor paper. Eg. Arteza 9 x 12 140 lb. watercolor sketchbook

Pencils—graphite, Inktense, watercolor (whatever you have)

    Spray bottle

    Water container

    Pastels, charcoal (optional)

Any plein air items you prefer—painting board, portable easel, tarp or plastic, stool. We will only paint outside for a short time, so you need not have an elaborate setup.

Watercolor and/or acrylics are welcome. Your choice. Demo will be primarily acrylic, but this method works for all media. Bring just a few colors to try this method. Do not go out and buy these, bring what you have. If you wish, bring:

                    Prussian and/or cobalt blue

                    White

                    Paynes Gray or Black

                    Yellow Ochre or Raw Sienna

                    Sap, Jenkins, or Deep Green

                    Lemon or Cad Yellow Light

A red to pop in a bit of color. Magenta, Cad Red Medium or Pyrrole Red

Additional information is emailed to those who register.

Painting a boat in water under bright sunlight with watercolor beautifully captures the vibrant interplay of light and reflections. How to go about it? You might want to start with a light pencil sketch to outline the boat's shape and position on the water. Use bold, warm tones for the boat to highlight the sunlit areas, and softer, cooler colors to suggest shadows and contours. The water can be rendered with fluid, transparent washes of blue and green, capturing the shimmering reflections of the boat and the play of light on the water's surface. Pay attention to the bright highlights where the sunlight strikes, and use soft edges to blend the boat with its reflection, creating a realistic sense of water's movement. The translucent nature of watercolor lends itself perfectly to depicting the clarity and sparkle of the scene, making the boat appear both solid and part of the shimmering landscape.

This Plein Air event will focus on painting boats.

Student will bring a figurative reference photo (some will also be provided) or an animal photo and learn how to use a variety of materials to create a collage to enhance their composition. This is an excellent way to add pattern and texture quickly. Start collecting napkins with patterns, patterned pages from magazines, patterned tissue paper, pages from books, sheet music, gift bags, fabric, cards…anything that you can glue on a piece of paper!

Acrylic or watercolors, brushes, pencil or charcoal, water container,

watercolor paper (1/4 of a large sheet is fine but use what you have), mat medium, paper towels, latex gloves, permanent markers, scissors, a variety of patterned papers (as mentioned above), figurative images (whole body or upper body), this might be a good opportunity to do that self portrait you’ve been tempted to do!

You may not use all of the above, you may add items I haven’t listed. You are now a hunter of pattern and texture.

    Topic:  Nature Scene

    Location:  Galveston, TX

Additional information is emailed to those who register.

Painting cranes in a natural scene with watercolor allows for a graceful representation of these elegant birds in serene landscape. How to go about it? You might want to begin by sketching the cranes, focusing on their distinctive shapes and poised postures. Use soft, delicate washes for their plumage, capturing the subtle interplay of light and shadow on their feathers. For the surrounding environment, apply gentle hues of green, blue, and brown to depict wetlands, tall grasses, or reflective water bodies. The fluidity of watercolor is ideal for rendering the tranquil atmosphere of the scene, with the cranes standing out against the soft, natural background. Pay special attention to the reflection of the cranes in the water, if present, and the soft blending of colors to convey the peacefulness and harmony of nature. The result will be a harmonious composition that highlights the beauty and elegance of cranes in their natural habitat.

Sandhill Cranes come to winter in Galveston. About a few hundred of these elegant birds take advantage of the milder climate and plentiful food resources on the island. In Galveston, they are called affectionately Sandies. Like most cranes, Sandies are monogamous and mate for life, spending 20-30 years together year-round, so it is likely that many of our winter visitors have been returning to Galveston year after year for decades.

This Plein Air event will focus on painting a nature scene and Sandhill Cranes.

Painting a mansion and its garden in watercolor provides an opportunity to capture the grandeur and elegance of the architecture along with the natural beauty of the landscape. How to go about it? You might want to begin by sketching the mansion's architectural features, such as columns, windows, and intricate details, then use light washes to establish the overall color scheme. Gradually build up layers to add depth and texture to the building, highlighting its materials and the play of light and shadow. For the garden, apply vibrant greens and florals, using a variety of brushstrokes to depict lush foliage, blooming flowers, and manicured lawns. Watercolor's translucence allows for a beautiful rendering of the sunlight filtering through trees and casting dappled shadows. The contrast between the solid structure of the mansion and the soft, organic forms of the garden creates a balanced and harmonious scene, bringing the stately setting to life on paper.

Bayou Bend Gardens are located in the River Oaks area. The Gardens are a 14-acre facility of the Houston Museum of Fine Arts.  Bayou Bend is the former home of philanthropist Ima Hogg. The mansion, designed by architect John Staub, was built in 1928. Staub's plan for Bayou Bend combined 18th-century Georgian architecture with elements that are distinctly Southern and of Spanish Creole architecture. Other aspects of Bayou Bend's design are borrowed from Southern plantation houses.

During construction, Ima Hogg insisted that as many trees as possible be kept. Only one tree was sacrificed to make room for the house, and the gardens were created around the existing trees. Miss Hogg created a series of gardens that were intended as outdoor rooms for living and entertaining. In 1957, Miss Hogg donated her home and her collection to the Museum of Fine Arts. Bayou Bend opened to the public in 1966.

This Plein Air event will focus on painting a building, garden, and people.
