"Monochrome Magic: Painting with Values "

Supplies: 100% cotton, 140 lb paper

Nan Wright began her creative journey as a globe-trotting photographer, capturing everyday life in Asia, Europe, North Africa, and South America. Today, she has traded pixels for pigments, bringing the same eye for light, texture, composition, and subtle quirk to her watercolor paintings.

She has studied with renowned artists such as Karen Vance, Vlad Yeliseyev, and Brienne Brown, developing a distinctive and recognizable style. Her work has been juried into international watercolor exhibitions and has received numerous awards.

Nan’s paintings have been featured annually on the Winter Park Art Trail and in Plein Air @ Altitude in Winter Park, Colorado, since their 2021 beginnings. She has also exhibited in Galveston, Steamboat, Breckenridge, and with Arts for Rural Texas in Fayetteville, and has received six invitations to the prestigious Bayou City Art Festival in Houston.

In addition to exhibiting her work, Nan teaches watercolor classes at the 600-member Watercolor Art Society of Houston, where she also volunteers her time.

She is a member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Watercolor Art Society–Houston, Outdoor Painters Society, Women in the Visual and Literary Arts, and Fraser Valley Arts.

Each Wednesday we host an art gathering for Seniors. This is a friendly and supportive group - all levels are welcome to join and there is no fee for this class however, online registration is required to participate.

Students bring their own supplies (paper, paints, brushes, paper towels, etc.) - only water-media please.

This weekly event is a community outreach to seniors 55+ only.

House portraits make great gifts, and recipients love the memories recreated in a beautiful painting. We will go step-by-step through a simple process to take a photograph and make a painting. I’ll provide tips for setting up the drawing, favorite paint color mixes, and a nice way to present the finished painting. You will have the tools you need to paint a portrait of any house on your own once you finish our lesson.

Karen is a professional artist based in Houston, Texas. Her love of art began in childhood, when she spent countless hours drawing and even enrolled in adult painting classes while still in elementary school. She went on to study Fine Art and Design at the University of Texas at Austin before pursuing a career in advertising and database marketing for retailers.

To balance the demands of her profession, Karen sought out art classes wherever she could, studying at the Glassell School of Art in Houston, The Art League of Houston, the Watercolor Art Society–Houston, the Eliot School in Boston, Massachusetts College of Art, and in workshops with nationally recognized artists. Over the years, she experimented with many approaches, but always returned to watercolor, captivated by its luminosity and expressive beauty.

Inspired by nature—its organic forms, shifting colors, and ever-changing light—Karen finds watercolor uniquely suited to capture the radiance and subtlety of the natural world on paper.

Beyond the studio, she enjoys traveling with her husband and teenage son, taking peaceful morning walks, and curling up with a good book alongside her beloved dog and cat.

Take time to reflect on your artwork and analyze the feedback you receive from the instructor and peers. This course will help you identify strengths and weaknesses in your paintings, and use this information to refine your technique and style. Continually challenging yourself to grow as an artist, this class aims to introduce students to the principles of composition and provide them with the necessary skills to analyze and critique artwork effectively.

Through practical exercises, demos, and discussions, students will develop a critical eye to evaluate and provide constructive feedback on artwork. Class begins with a group critique setting on what the student is currently working on. The class will then move to simple exercises as a warm- up. Experimenting and trying new things is key to progression in your process and style development as an artist – it's an essential part of the creative process!

This class is not a “how-to” class. We will discuss concepts, artistic principles, techniques, color schemes that will help each artist regardless of their style and subject and often paint together to learn a new technique. Ideally, we become a consistent group, whose input is varied and meaningful. The idea is that you will focus on a subject and approach to carry your ideas forward in a connected way. Work outside class is essential.

Level: Intermediate, Advanced

Do you want to push your painting, define your style, and create a body of work that is cohesive and personal? This will be a student-driven class, with more of a coaching/critique vibe, helping each artist work towards a simple goal – to find their “path” whether it be realistic or abstract, portraits, landscapes, still-life based….. whatever it is that inspires you. This class is not a “how-to” class. We will discuss concepts, artistic principles, techniques, color schemes that will help each artist regardless of their style and subject and often paint together to learn a new technique. Ideally, we become a consistent group, whose input is varied and meaningful. The idea is that you will focus on a subject and approach to carry your ideas forward in a connected way. Work outside class is essential.

Level: Intermediate, Advanced

Supply List:

Please bring regular watercolor supplies, palette, brushes, paper, paper towels, pencil, eraser, sponges, water sprayer etc.

Be prepared to paint outside of class, so that we can critique during class time and keep your painting goals on track.

Chinese landscape painting has had a profound influence on East Asian art and continue to inspire artists worldwide. Its emphasis on harmony, spirituality, and the beaty of nature resonates across cultures and time periods. In this workshop, students will learn the techniques of Rocks, Mountings and trees. Lean the spontaneity and control to the expressive quality of the brushstrokes. Each technique is demonstrated by the instructor. Students are receiving individual attention adapted to their particular skill level and interests.

Student Supply List:

1. Paper: any kind of absorbent paper as Sumi Pager Jin-Pi, or Sumi Page Pi-Ma, a pad of oriental Rice paper. For beginners, the better Shuen paper is semi absorbency rice paper. You can go online search half Raw & Half Ripe Xuan paper.

2. Brush: a large hard brush as wolf brush, or orchid bamboo brush, or mountain horse brush. a large combination brush, a small orchid bamboo brush.

3. A bottle of Chinese Sumi ink.

Peihong D Endris graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1993. From 1990 to 1999, she served as an art editor for the Beijing Review. Her artwork has been exhibited internationally in China, South Korea, Singapore, and Tokyo, as well as in California and throughout Texas. Her work has been included in several group exhibitions, art books, and prestigious collections; notably, her painting "Fragrant Moonlit" was presented by the Chinese government to the French government. Since moving to the United States in 1999, Peihong has taught various Chinese ink art classes and workshops at institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (Glassell School), The Jung Center, Watercolor Art Society of Houston, West University Rec Center, Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Rice University, and Asia Society Texas Center.

This registration is for both In-Person attendance and Live-Stream.

With a minimum of drawing, landscapes will be explored with attention to atmospheric perspective, color harmony, value, and texture.

This is a guided class — but individual expression is celebrated!

STUDENT SUPPLY LIST:

1. The best paper you can afford (hopefully 100% cotton!!!) — minimum size 9x12”.

2. Masking tape and boards (if not working on a block.) …We will be completing two paintings each day. (Necessary: two different paper set-ups, as we will be working on pieces simultaneously.)

3. Palette with large flat mixing surface -- old, white dinner plate works well too.

4. Mid-sized (#6-8) cheap, STIFF fan brush

5. Old toothbrush

6. Winsor & Newton Designer's Gouache, Permanent White

7. Masking tape

8. Exacto knife.

9. A couple of craggy NATURAL sea sponges

10. An artist notebook (or the back of old paintings) for exercises. (Cotton not necessary for this item.)

Nan Wright’s work is shaped by a lifelong habit of close looking. Her creative path began as a globe-trotting photographer, documenting everyday life across Asia, Europe, North Africa, and South America. That experience continues to inform her watercolor paintings, where light, texture, composition, and small visual surprises remain central concerns.

Today, Nan works in watercolor, trading pixels for pigments while maintaining the same observational discipline developed behind the camera. She is drawn to moments that feel familiar yet slightly unexpected—places where structure meets looseness, and clarity gives way to atmosphere. Her approach balances control and spontaneity, allowing the medium’s inherent unpredictability to play an active role in the final image.

Nan’s paintings have been featured annually on the Winter Park Art Trail and in Plein Air @ Altitude in Winter Park, Colorado, since their 2021 beginnings. She has also exhibited in Galveston, Steamboat, Avon, Breckenridge, and with Arts for Rural Texas in Fayetteville, and has received six invitations to the prestigious Bayou City Art Festival in Houston. Nan was a recipient of the 2025 artist residence for "Westbound Art" on the California Zypher train.

In addition to exhibiting her work, Nan teaches watercolor classes at the 600-member Watercolor Art Society of Houston, where she also volunteers her time.

She is a member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Watercolor Art Society–Houston, Outdoor Painters Society, Women in the Visual and Literary Arts, Women in Watercolor, and Fraser Valley Arts.

Watercolor Boot Camp will get you started with all the tools and techniques you need to set you on the trail for a successful journey as a watercolorist.

We will learn all the basic techniques (wet-on-wet, flat wash, graded wash, radual wash, gradual wash, dry brush, lifting), color mixing and application and special effects. We will investigate materials and supplies.

In the afternoon we will put all the watercolor tools together to create a finished painting that will have you saying, "Wow, I did that!"

The goal is to get you started on the right foot and build your confidence.

Nan Wright’s work is shaped by a lifelong habit of close looking. Her creative path began as a globe-trotting photographer, documenting everyday life across Asia, Europe, North Africa, and South America. That experience continues to inform her watercolor paintings, where light, texture, composition, and small visual surprises remain central concerns.

Today, Nan works in watercolor, trading pixels for pigments while maintaining the same observational discipline developed behind the camera. She is drawn to moments that feel familiar yet slightly unexpected—places where structure meets looseness, and clarity gives way to atmosphere. Her approach balances control and spontaneity, allowing the medium’s inherent unpredictability to play an active role in the final image.

Nan’s paintings have been featured annually on the Winter Park Art Trail and in Plein Air @ Altitude in Winter Park, Colorado, since their 2021 beginnings. She has also exhibited in Galveston, Steamboat, Avon, Breckenridge, and with Arts for Rural Texas in Fayetteville, and has received six invitations to the prestigious Bayou City Art Festival in Houston. Nan was a recipient of the 2025 artist residence for "Westbound Art" on the California Zypher train.

In addition to exhibiting her work, Nan teaches watercolor classes at the 600-member Watercolor Art Society of Houston, where she also volunteers her time.

She is a member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Watercolor Art Society–Houston, Outdoor Painters Society, Women in the Visual and Literary Arts, Women in Watercolor, and Fraser Valley Arts.

Jan McNeill has always loved watercolor but with a full time job and 2 children, there wasn’t much time left over! She was able to begin her watercolor journey 25 years ago when her children became teenagers and she was able to start a weekly night class with Caroline Graham.

Jan has learned a lot from various workshops, teachers, art books, and magazines. She learned that she does her best work on hot press paper with round brushes.

Jan became actively involved with WAS-H after she retired. She’s held a variety of board positions including President, Vice President, Gallery Director, and Publicity Director. She currently is the Board Historian.

Jan loves watercolor and the WAS-H organization! She hopes that you also find it enjoyable and helpful in your own watercolor journey.

With a minimum of drawing, landscapes will be explored with attention to atmospheric perspective, color harmony, value, and texture.

This is a guided class — but individual expression is celebrated!

STUDENT SUPPLY LIST:

1. The best paper you can afford (hopefully 100% cotton!!!) — minimum size 9x12”.

2. Masking tape and boards (if not working on a block.) …We will be completing two paintings each day. (Necessary: two different paper set-ups, as we will be working on pieces simultaneously.)

3. Palette with large flat mixing surface -- old, white dinner plate works well too.

Cheryl’s first classroom teaching experience was in a tree house overlooking the ditch on First Street and Craig in Pasadena, Texas. The six-year-old teacher taught her eager pupils how to draw a palm tree and a bunny, and her 40+-year art teaching career was launched. She went on to receive a BFA and MA and teach the wonders of art to students from ages 4 – 94, from kindergarten to college.

She was named Texas Art Educator of the Year in 2012, an ELITE Signature member at WAS-H, and she is still enthusiastically sharing her love of art as a painting instructor. She teaches art teachers as a pre-service and workshop presenter throughout Texas, and has taught workshops at many art leagues throughout Texas. Her paintings are in collections here and abroad, and recently had a very successful one-woman show at the Tower Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her work ranges from landscape to portraiture to abstract. Presently she is the Educational Director at WAS-H and a producing watercolorist.

She can still draw a mean palm tree.

This Plein Air event will focus on a sculpture outdoors

Join us for an inspiring day of art and creativity at BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Temple. The temple materials and sculptures were carved out of Italian marble and Turkish limestone by 3,000 craftsmen in India, and then shipped to Houston for building this magnificent mandir. It is composed of 33,000 pieces of marble and limestone that were fitted together in tongue-and-groove fashion like a three-dimensional puzzle. The entire structure, including the foundation, does not contain a single piece of iron or steel.
